Even though stockings are not part of our Christmas traditions here in Finland, I fell in love with them many years ago. I have several large ones that I have sewn using lovely Christmas print fabrics. Last year I created the small lacey stocking. It is great for a tree decoration or to add to Christmas cards.

This year it was time to make a multicolour stocking! It looks very different according to what colour yarns you decide to use. The stockings are small enough to go on your Christmas tree but big enough to have little surprises in them.

These stockings have been made using three colours in each. I had DK (8 ply) yarn and a hook size 4 mm. A stocking is 15 cm (6 in) high. I have used the same colour sequence in all the sample stockings. But you could have more than three colours or have your yarn in a different order for a great variety of looks.

Ideas for using the stockings:

  • Tree decoration
  • Bunting with many stockings
  • Advent calendar with 24 stockings
  • Hang on your mantelpiece
  • Hang on doors or stairs
  • Teacher present
