These stocking shape Christmas tree decorations are quick to crochet, and it’s a pattern that you can easily learn by heart. Make them in different colours for your tree or give as little presents. They are ideal to attach to or send with Christmas cards. You can also use them as appliques to decorate gift bags, table mats, cushion covers etc. They are a similar style and technique as the crochet bells, so you might want to make some of both. Here’s a close-up of one stocking:

What you need

  • About 9 metres (10 yards) of yarn. I used sport weight bamboo and cotton and fingering weight glitter yarn.
  • Crochet hook to go with your yarn. For sport weight, I used hook 3 mm.

Here is one great choice of yarns in a selection of colours: http://amzn.to/2B4zwHL.

In sport weight yarn, hook 3 mm, the stocking will be about 10 cm (4 in) high.

Pattern

The pattern is available as a video tutorial and as a crochet chart. Here’s the step by step video:

Chart

The starting chain has been marked in green. At first you make the picots at the top of the stocking. Then you continue to crochet into the other side of the chain. This has been marked with arrows. If you need extra explanation about making the wrapped double crochet, please check the video at this place.

You can use your imagination and available embellishments to make each stocking different. Could you give one to each person you spend Christmas with? Or to your children’s teachers, sports club leaders etc? Add bows or ribbons, crochet around the stocking in glitter yarn, add beads or sequence.
